Urban infrastructures like sewage systems, metros, supermarkets, and data centres are often overlooked sources of heat. Together, these systems could supply up to 10% of Europe’s heating demand for buildings. Notably, data centres alone contribute almost a quarter of this urban waste heat.
As data centres expand, so does the potential to harness their heat. By integrating these sources into district heating and cooling networks, we can enhance the flexibility, reliability, and sustainability of energy systems, making them more affordable and environmentally friendly.
Additionally, connecting data centres to these networks supports the development of advanced technologies like heat pumps and thermal storage systems, strengthening the role of renewable heating and cooling as alternatives to fossil fuels.
